Romance Wake Naming
UnlockedPropelled by mangled breakbeats, cassette cut up experiments, and Mark Trecka’s crooning howl, "Romance Wake Naming" draws from the experimental and even hip-hop roots of industrial music rather than the sullen coolness that is so often exploited in contemporary post-punk scenes. The emotionally and texturally rich result lives in the hinterlands between heavily experimental trip-hop / illbient and a kind of dreamy industrial art punk. Vinyl available via The Garrote. Mbira performance (loop source) on track 1 by jaimie branch. Sampled speaking voice on track 1 is Jackie Wang, borrowed from a lecture based on her book Carceral Capitalism. Production, mixing, synth performance and drum programming on track 2 by Paul Barker. Speaking voice on track 4 by Emily Cross, sampled from “Correspondences as Shelter.” Synth on track 5 by Doug Tesnow and Evan Hydzik. Bass and synth on track 6 by Sam Skarstand, who also engineered and recorded a variety of the performances throughout this record including vocals and bass on tracks 2 and 6. Sampled and looped speaking voice on track 6 is Audra Wolowiec. Breath and movement sound sources are Claire Deane, Sienna Blaw, Erin Landers, and Jacki Calle Hernandez. Rhythm on tracks 4 and 7 is sampled from Meat Beat Manifesto, “Edge of No Control.” Mastering, additional mixing, finessing, pasting, and so on by Evan Hydzik and Doug Tesnow.
