Triple Mirror

After several fervent years moving through Melbourne’s live underground, performing as Joshua Wells, Nerve, and across various collaborative projects and bands (Enzyme, Charlatan Prism, Degenerate & more), Wells surfaces in solitary form as Training Chamber, returning to Downwards following his debut in YLP (The Image of 36, 2020). A marked shift away from the direct physicality of his punk and rhythm-focused output, Triple Mirror centres on the slow construction of instrumental environments, shaped through disciplined studio practice and live performance development. Processed guitar and bass, tape loops, field recordings, piano fragments, melodica and ’90s-era synthesised instruments assemble into a quietly cinematic soundworld. The recordings channel the stark, atmospheric instrumentals associated with Felte’s shadowed catalogue, the psychological tension and liminal architecture of Hideo Kojima’s worlds, Scorpion Winds’s folk dirges and the devotional, dusk-lit ambience of Dead Can Dance. Written in parallel with performances supporting HTRK, Shackleton, Nazar and amid collaborations with EROS, Tarquin Manek, MC Yallah, R. Rebeiro and Karina Utomo, the material emerged from periods of writing and preparation, ultimately resolving into solitary works shaped by restraint and negative space.
